Amy released the hugely successful single 'Just a Little Girl' in the summer of 2002 followed, almost a year later, by her second single 'Misfit' (which became her highest charting track). An incredibly talented singer/songwriter, Amy is back with a follow up to her debut album 'False Smiles', entitled 'My Paper Made Men', which is due for release this March.
We caught up with Amy to ask her a few questions about her newest release 'Nice Boy's' and life after 'False Smiles'.
Not long ago you toured with Razorlight, was it good to be back on stage?
Initially daunting but amazing to perform. It feels like quite a while ago now, I want to go back and do it again!
How have you been keeping busy since the release of your debut album in 2003?
I just spent my time getting back to normal life and letting things die down a bit. Then I started writing this new album, spread out over about 5 years.
Are you enjoying the, already prominent, success of 'My Paper Made Men'?
I am over the moon to just hear someone say they have heard it! It feels like this album has been a real fight to get it to where it is now but I think that is cool cos you can tell when a lot has gone into a record, from the sound, the lyrics, right down to the artwork. So the struggle is just another part of it. I have put everything I have got into this album and I am immensely proud of it.
How would you describe your musical direction now, compared to 'False Smiles'?
With the first album that was just me age 15, growing up, a snap shot of me back then. Having fun and not understanding, caring or really grasping what would happen outside of the studio and away from my piano.
My music has changed as I've changed. I suppose with exception of 'nice boys' the album is a lot more serious and I personally think it is fuller and weightier. I care a lot about the lyrics and I worked very hard on them to make them the best that they could be.
Recent single 'Nice Boys' is a popular music TV favourite, which is your favourite track from the new album?
I love all of the album! I don't think there is a single throw away song on there. Funnily enough my least favourite songs (if you could say that) are both 'Chasing The Light' and 'Nice Boys' which are both out with videos! I think the album just gets better after the singles. If I have to pick my favourite tracks they would be 'Sad Sad World', 'She Walks Beautiful' and 'Here Lies Love', oh wait! And 'One Last Cigarette'.
Favourite track from the old album?
Seconds away.
Do you have any upcoming shows or tours in the pipeline?
I am about to do an acoustic tour up and down the UK in a few weeks time and I am hoping to just do as many gigs as possible. So keep your eyes peeled on my website, myspace and facebook etc!
So, what's next for Amy Studt?
More gigging and hopefully more singles. Then more albums! Its gonna take a lot to get rid of me. Music's not just something I could "give up". The idea of giving it up now seems ridiculous. How can you give up something that is who you are? If I gave up music I would feel like I was giving up myself. It's who I am. Music is my life.
