"I'm not that girl anymore, she went away..." Not my words (that would be some confession), but the words of Amy Studt and she really means it. This album isn't the maturing work of an ex teen-popstar, it's an entirely different artist.
My Paper Made Men starts with the jazz-rock of 'Sad Sad World'. Crunchy guitar, unhinged piano and rolling drum sticks teasingly build and fall, retreating from the brink of something big before dropping away to tease once again. When it reaches the crescendo, it sounds like Tori Amos and Kate Bush, with just enough Natalie Imbruglia inside to keep the song in focus.
In fact, the album constantly pulls together the diverse; elements of showtime, jazz, pop and rock all caged by an intricate, yet accessible, song writing style.
The tone of the album ranges from a gently melancholic 'Furniture' to a triumphant 'Chasing The Light' and in various scales between lies pain, anger and hope, all mixed inextricably into the music and lyrics.
This is a brilliant deuxieme debut from a very talented singer, songwriter and musician.
We rated this record 4 out of 5.
