Shedding his indie-heritage and striking out in search of something more meaningful, Andi Evans debut album has the searching sounds of an accomplished songwriter.
There's a good mix of songs on this album, from the sparkling 'Under Willow Trees' to the melancholy 'Hospital Beds', but they all have a thoughtful composition and assured melody. The sound is somewhere between Dlugokecki and The Motorpool, which perhaps means Andi hasn't entirely abandoned his indie origins.
'Drawing Hearts' is an unusual song, with a great rhythm and strong vocal performance. It demonstrates that the song writing doesn't follow a pattern or convention, which along with Andi's voice is part of the draw of this record.
There's something reminiscent of Johnny Cash in 'Seasons', with it's deep voiced lyrics and subtle American flavours. 'Beautiful' is like a lost Radiohead record, but with Andi's voice supplying the melody.
All in all, it's more than just an acoustic album. This is a rich and varied record that does justice to the song writing.
