Below Defect

Below Defect spin up some angry rock-metal in their latest single 'Dying Revolution'. This is a song of two very conflicting elements, which I will explain in turn.

The bad stuff includes plenty of lost time in the beat, with one or two painfully off-time moments especially during the fills, which all seem to add half-a-beat to the current section. It's not just the drummer who leaves things a bit messy around the edges, with the instrumental solo, which has very little percussion, having a few off moments despite both the bass player and guitarist demonstrating a reasonable amount of skill.

Conversely, there is a lot of good to be found within this song. The warm guitar solo sounds great, the bass player holds down a tidy riff (despite the terrible bass sound) and the singer sounds reasonably genuine.

Below Defect aren't quite there. This song has equal measures of good and bad moments, which on the whole makes it a very difficult listen. What this record does hint at is a vast improvement on their previous efforts, so if this band can take one thing away from this review, it is that they are moving in the right direction.
