Caroline Ty

So if Nick Cave was a lady, sang in an operatic tenor and was a fan of jazz music, then he'd be a little bit like Caroline Ty.

From the outset, this is a musical record with exotic rhythms and big vocals, crashing in waves against a pebbly beach of contemporary lyrics and new-wave poetry.

'The Wanderer' is probably the most successful song on the record. A solid electro-opera that is to New Order what Meat Loaf is to Led Zeppelin. It has hints of Lunascape, but on this record the dream is much darker.

Things are similar, but less successful in 'Queen Bee'. The idea seems to have been exhausted already and although changes have been made, the core components are very similar.

'A Most Charming Thief' and 'Whistle And I'll Come To You' are made harder to endure by some nasty Chris De Burgh electronic beats, the clicking sounds invading the sonic space.

I'll be honest, this isn't the easiest of listens. It's unusual in quite a challenging way - jazz and opera on their own are often too much for the delicate musical palates of the masses, but combined with eighties beats, dark lyricism and drama they are hard even for those with a stronger constitution.
