Endorphins are released from the pituitary glands of the brain in moments of bodily exhilaration and ecstasy. As the rush diminishes and the endorphins vaporise, an impending pang of despair unfolds. This is the sound of Out Of The Pond And Into The Jungle. A throbbing brain-ache delivered by horrendously distorted tones, unbroken drum patterns and annoying vocals that could zap the life from the most optimistic.
In this breakfast of bad drugs and befuddled art-rock, the Bolton based quartet fail to break the mould. If Mudhoney were to feltch the remaining sludge from the anus of Kurt Cobain's corpse then you'd have The Endorphins.
But even that perverse and unholy act would have some trace of musical beauty.
In 'T-Rex' the theme may be dinosaurs but the roar is more like a gurgle from an incoherent gutter swell. The revolving door drum beats serve only to disorientate, while the barely tonal vocals sluice through the mix like a wet fart.
'Splash' beams a shard of hope into the sludgy cacophony. Small sprigs of glimmering guitar sprinkle the otherwise fuzzy head fuck. Touches of early Dinosaur Jnr are enough to keep the track rolling, yet still, a tune ceases to emerge from the unfocused, dirty mess. In all, this is certainly the more radio friendly of the trio, and probably could have found its way on to the John Peel show.
Closing track 'Weird Imagination' is another slice of anti-melody, which leaves you wondering why they bothered. Sure, it has energy, but it is not channelled to great effect. The noise just seems to roll through without any sense of direction or creative purpose, leaving the whole thing just a waste of time and space.
