Despite hearing a lot of really, really good music, I have only been utterly stunned by three records in my whole life. The first time was back in the nineties when Therapy? released Infernal Love. The next occasion was The Early November's The Room's Too Cold. The third time was today.
Today, I heard Idiot3's The Monster and The Grey Goose and it's only the third time in my life that I've felt like this about a record.
It all starts with 'Stereo', a huge melodic track with chunky guitars and thundering bass that drives it all along to a chorus of epic proportions. There's an amazing section bridging the gap between the short verse and the storming chorus with overlapping punchy vocals and a stunning rhythm.
On its own, 'Stereo' is an awesome song, but with 'Feelings' hot on its heels, the EP is already unbelievably good. 'Feelings' features a dirty guitar sound over crispy bass and sweet drums with a rhythm that equally grinds and sparkles. There's a hair-tingling break towards the end of the track that really makes you feel the building of something special in this song.
'Sick Of This' is an edgy track with Nurse-era drumming, urgent vocals and an electrocution of energetic guitars that range from wiry to smoky. It's got a frantic feel and raises the pulse-rate with its dangerous feel.
Idiot3 draw you back from the edge with the smooth harmonies of 'Little Much Touch', which has yet another awesome rhythm with plenty of changes throughout. The guitars flicker like lights through a diamond.
Some acoustic guitars hint at an end of EP come-down, but 'Monster' surprises on all fronts as it sparks into life. This is a uniquely epic track with builds and falls like great melodic tides. It's got so many textures, speeds and tones it's unbelievably varied, but it's all tied together with expert ease and the keyboards and guitars merge together to create some beautifully emotional musical sections.
This record scorches, smoulders and explodes - and you'll feel it in the music, in the lyrics and in the spirit of this record.
