Bournemouth's Matt Marr not only shares his surname with one of the coolest and greatest guitar players EVER but he's got the talent and the tunes to ensure the name Marr continues to be associated with fantastic music for a while yet.
This five track EP is the result of ten years of playing shows relentlessly in an attempt to raise his profile and, if there's any justice, Marr's songs will gain him the recognition that his obvious talent and determination richly deserve.
'Bombs Of Thunder' is an uplifting, guitar-driven pop roller-coaster that reminds me of Lloyd Cole or Nick Heyward's 90s stuff and that can only be a good thing. Uplifting character piece "Men As Trees" also showcases Marr's liking for a great melody and carefully thought out lyrics.
Best of all though is closing track 'I Still Love You Dear' with it's stark acoustic sound and moving lyrics, this could easily have been written by Nick Drake.
Matt Marr is a name to definitely look out for. His songs are simple, straightforward and yet still maintain a depth and mystery to them. Undoubtedly Marr has the talent to prove that the good songs have not quite all been taken yet.
