This record has the angst of youth, with some heartfelt anti-melodies and guitars that dominate the mix.
Night Portraits are a band that have that indie-rock crossover sound and the anonymity that this supplies could be a major weak spot. It really doesn't stamp it's individuality on the world with it's well-played but white-label sound.
'Secret Love' has some interesting moments in the verse, but disappears back into generic guitar-band territory in between and 'Otters of Beirut' is a similar story, starting dark and ingenious, but descending into the mists soon after.
Night Portraits have plenty of reasons to be pleased with this record, but they need to avoid becoming the guy at the party that nobody remembers.
