Purple Worm Records

Purple Worm Records are home to quite an array of bands with many variation on the indie sound, from world, to ska, to lounge to rock. It's not one hundred percent indie, there's off sparks of pure instrumental and the odd bit of music that's too heavy to fit into the world of indie, but on the whole it's quite indie-fied.

There are eleven tracks on this sampler and I'm not left with the feeling of having discovered an amazing and promising new band. Steer's 'I Don't Know' is one of the better tracks along with 'We're There With You' by the sparkling and unassumingly delicate Ellerker, who throw shades of Arthur Enders without the angst. I also like the creativity of Alex Larkham's 'Captivate' even though I dislike the vocals. The most commercially viable song on the record is Arthur Nutley's electro-fuzz-pop 'When I Heard Him', which bounces around like a Ting Ting's track.

I'm a bit disappointed as I really like Purple Worm's community spirit and independent outlook. I would love this label to do well, but for an indie to truly burst the seams of the record industry, it really needs some killer bands to spearhead the label. There's nothing awful on this record by any means, but n the whole it remains good rather than awesome; listenable more than loveable.

It may be worth keeping one eye on this label, but they aren't quite ready to brandish the lance against the majors just yet.
