The Cats are a three-piece from Dumfries, Scotland, who, in their own words "love to play good old fashioned rock n roll, but in our own raw and rockin way". I can happily go along with that! Opener 'You Can't Stop Me' bounces along on a funk-infused blues groove, with some tight rhythm section work, and understated but telling guitars from Fras.
'I Just Got Paid' is almost rockabilly in feel, and the impression that The Cats are a band who would have been perfect for the late 50's/early 60's persists. Again the musical performance is tight, if a little one-dimensional (there seems to have been little-to-no over-dubbing on this project, so textures are similar throughout). 'Lost and Found' is a more laid-back 6/8 verse allied to a stadium rock chorus. A classy way to finish the demo.
While the limitations of a demo budget are obvious here, the songwriting on show is strong, and the performances showcased give the impression that there could be much more to come from these Cats. Look for more to come on their debut full-length, due out soon.
