Before we focus on The Leano's new LP, Just Another Human Being, I decided to have a quick look at our review of his previous album, Steps To Leanoland, which we didn't like! Not only is it a thoroughly enjoyable read, it's pleasing to note that it hasn't fazed his musical journey in the slightest. I must admit, the previous review almost put me off of playing this record, but judging a book by it's cover really isn't a good trait (I was told over and over again by my mother you should give everyone a chance) so I put the CD into the player and waited anxiously for the torture to begin.
However my little ears weren't subjected to anything torturous. 'Ode To Love' seems to be fuelled by that very thing, not pink fluffy heart type love, but the pure and honest kind, and this honesty continues throughout the album. The raw edge that The Leano's vocal contains, creates a down to earth personality to the lyrics and overall finish to the tracks. 'Ode To Love' is a bright song with a good rhythm and passion which creates an addictive summery feeling.
'Rush To Nowhere' introduces a new dimension to this album with a fantastic guitar solo performed by DK. It's refreshing to hear a rapper use a proper instrumental backing instead of just relying on the studio to the create the mix.
As the album progresses the songs get more meaningful with some of that rapper-attitude poking through, the summery tunes are wearing thin and the overall sound becomes heavy and the lyrics begin to waver on the pretentious side, like in 'Call Me The Leano'. Although it's beginning to lose it's originality, it's still very addictive especially 'Hands Are Tied' which every time grabs your attention and makes you think.
Overall this album is a triumph. The Leano has captured everyday problems in the world and has expressed them musically through his contagious vocal and mixes. I can only imagine The Leano has grown as a musician from the first time we heard him and this definitely shows he had the courage to send in another album for us to scrutinise. But what can you say, determination is what gets you results and in this case The Leano should sit back and bask in this glowing review.
