It's been a full four years since we last heard The Skinks and it's fair to say that those years haven't been wasted. It also counts in their favour that the eighties is now back en-vogue thanks to the Journey-revival.
'Time Stands Still' has some good guitar work to spice up the air-punching intro and this subsides into a swimmy effect for the verse. The chorus is suitably anthemic and there's a few quick changes in volume to make the song more dynamic. This song even has a brief and tuneful solo, so it's a winner all round.
The next song, 'New Age Suicide' is the epitome of hairy-guitar-rock with a cool ramp-up in the chorus. This is probably the biggest track on the record.
'Angel' is probably a bit too much of an acoustic rock cliché, but 'Shifting Sands' is soon on hand to inject something altogether different into proceedings with an almost Dead!-Dead!-Dead!-esque sound.
What The Skinks offer is a basic rock sound that nods it's head to the rock sound of the eighties and early nineties, but with the odd curve-ball to freshen things up a bit.
